In The Middle Well you can water it down, until you think it’s nothing, but can’t deny the fact, diluting s just spreading it around. And you can hide it all away, if seeing is believing, then never getting sight of it is coming in and turning down the sound. I heard you say, wait up uncover your eyes and believe it We’re speeding on ahead, material possession on our minds And you can prettify and tidy up, but underneath it’s all the same, A paradoxical about a catalogue of faults you’re gonna find. You’re gonna find that, somehow you wound up there right there in the middle. Hoping sometimes lets you down Somehow you wound up there right there in the middle, reset direction, off you go again. You’re telling me noting ever changes while dreaming of the past, complaining isn’t acting on a categorical intent to find, and everything is there, everything for the taking, it all belongs collectively, we should agree and nobody should mind. You know we change/changed our way

Not The End 04:20
Not The End It could be seen as something sad, lament on times he could have had, but also, no use comparing lives by yours to his, we do what we do and that’s all there is. But anyway in the end, it’s not the end we remember, it’s all the times in-between, all you said and what you mean, all the lengthy conversations you repeated to no one. In other people’s memories is how we all survive. and nothings off limits when you’re trying to make a joke and having no regrets and not forgetting this moment. He told me as a child he was reserved, compared to kids no he was extrovert. The radio playing every night and day, encyclopaedic knowledge of every song that played. Met him at college and he always had, a bunch of car parts in an Adidas bag. The first thing I asked was why he took them round, he said “you never know when you’re gonna break down” And in the end it’s not the end you remember, it’s all the sarcastic comments all the honesty upon it, all the clever retrospection and changing for no one. In other people’s memories is how we all survive . and nothings off limits when you’re trying to make a joke and having no regrets and not forgetting this moment. Through many parties drinking throwing up, we were like brothers slowly growing up. I needed something didn’t have to ask and he was right there. Left Bury college unforgettably, passing a note nonchalantly to the tutor who read it and I never will forget it said “Dear Matt, fuck off, all the best Carl Pratt” He let me drive without a licence fine, we drove to Paris for crepe one time. Our conversations a philosophy, continues as we hit California. But no one’s life can be encapsulized, because we all live many different lives. And if you only met him when your paths quick crossed then that’s your loss. And in the end, it’s not the end we remember, it’s all the versions of truth, all the stories of youth, all the things others never forget are eternal. And though he’d never want a sentimental label stuck, I salute this moment of a life uncompromising, coz all the years, he never gave a flying fuck.

I Danced Sideways ...and I woke up with thoughts of a distant moment. Of a memory of 25 years ago and the more I thunk, the more came alive, the 3rd day and 7th month of 95' and why I was thinking now about it I don't know Tacos and a salad on a table top Talking next to Laura as the band sets up Sip another coffee as we read the news and I don't know. And as the hours passed, life’s lost all we spoke of I drank a soda & Tabasco and the music played and with the shutters pulled down and the lock-in came I know we'd never spend this time again and she danced and this Night (and Day) I did too and I danced sideways with no intention And we walked back the ten miles as the night split in the doorway of synagogue we sheltered from rain and I remember it as the only single moment that we were ever really happy together what explanation is that? I don't know But can you trust your memory at all?

Venice Again 03:55
Venice Again On the way, I slept on the plane. Arriving on time and things looked the same. I sat jetlag slaughtered at the Butchers Daughter, with a feeling like home that I can’t fully explain. And I skated down Kinney at six in the morning. Espresso at Groundwork and pastures as well. Then picked up a rental from the Loews hotel. And then left commercial as I drove in circles. And I found time to hang around with sand between my teeth. A thousand miles, with nowhere ahead and beneath. On the way, the planning was LAX. There were mountains and forest and deserts designed to distract. With just introspection and with no direction Wound up in a diner, mulling over just what it is I miss, And I gotta figure out, how to live like this. Back sipping water at the Butchers Daughter, right back home in Venice again.

Sequoia 03:15
Sequioia Mondays, temperature falling, we trudged onwards, into the green. Where the sounds fall, dampened by breeze And our thoughts all, seem so small, next to the trees. It was freezing, you gotta be kidding me, it’s like all this has always been here. Sort of has been, over 3000 years. With our minds clear, we looked up at the trees.

Sentimental Bullshit We sleepwalked, no goal to get to. Behaviour slight, for some it all changed overnight. As the news told of places nowhere near, like what was happening there could never happen here. An then 19 arrived unseen, a twist, replacing times we missed. And I don’t miss the traffic, kind of like empty roads, but I dream of walking in a café now I know they’re closed. And suddenly everyone got it, silence something new. And there a was a time we all looked back to. All life just stared, when we were gone, took back what was their all along And people seem to pull together with magnetic force. And everything else will be revealed in course And I just wanted to hang out with a friend I’d missed But he’s no time for sentimental bullshit like this Millennial ones, perennial fun, wake up on what to focus on.

Hand Held Tighter Swept over this, that’s how we made it this far, swaddling covered, olive scented now elevate this simple hand held tighter, concrete over memories of past Understanding thread the truth right through it Spread it thin to make the good stuff last

The Will to go is strong as the thunder surrounds the party it rains in your veins.
15.
I Still Want That Onward spray, stirring in the nucleus of you Rumours spreading, we flew misguided into this, created by, committed for ourselves, Speeding by, the altitude caressing all the sore points till they’re gone Hanging on, scaffold clinging like koala tight to ourselves, And I still want that
16.
My Guitar 03:00
My Guitar When was the last time I touched your neck, felt your body and mine as one Time got between us for far too long, resonating on and on as you are We fooled around as the years went by, fitting snug, fitting like a glove Comfortably holding each other like, there could be no other love. And you’re always around and your voice is sound that is speaking the noise that I need. I can never explain it in words that you say, in a language that I understand but can’t read.
17.
Mellowed 03:24
Mellowed You said I’ve mellowed a bit too much, “I’m like a cat,” I sing “I sit for hours and look asleep, and then I kill something” Coz all this anger burns up precious energy And everybody hits a peak You can’t remember the last time you… I interrupt this bit While you’re a attempting to find the time, You could be doing it All these days are melting glaciers away Too but for everyone to see Later I respond to you, that thing you said to me I didn’t mellow at all, I’m just selective you see. I just better at deciding when to fight “but everybody seems to do”
18.
Pulse 05:10
Got a pulse that’s beating on, you don’t know what it’s like. Tell me the message might not get through.

For the caramel: sugar in water breaks down Bring to boil, until the colours deep brown Then pour at once into a warm dry tin, spreading it evenly once it’s all in Then eggs need beating as it get cool And you’ll need 3 eggs, half a cup of water, sugar and milk Bring the mil almost to boil and drip over beaten eggs and sugar Then you must sieve it all into the tin you filled before You;; find the scent is timeless as you pour And with some greaseproof, cover up and steam an hour or more In its upside down mould it can be eaten hot or cold Tip it upside down it can be eaten hot or cold

Hans Werksman

English musician Adam Irving is knowne to rely on the guitar as his main instrument of choice, but for his new album Baby Rhino he switched to the piano. It makes quite a difference and there are quite a few instrumentals besides his usual pop rock idiom - the melancholy of An Ice Day is summoned with an only a handful of notes, but each of them counts.

He is a traveller (Venice Again, A Garden In Topanga) and a story teller, always on the move with an open eye for his surroudings and the characters he runs into. He is his own backing vocalist and he can turn himself into a one-man XTC-alike band with songs Not The End and jazzy lounge lizard during I Danced Sideways that will go down well with fans of Rufus Wainwright.

Without a A&R-type breathing down his neck telling him wtat the people will like and expect he can roam free in a musical universe where the only rules he has to follow are his own. An eclectic album like Beby Rhino is like a full course meal, so it makes sense to top it with a recipe for a classic English desert, Caramel Custard Recipe.
